Hey, remember the submitter who checked out three Kyle-reviewed movies out of curiosity for a BHH Mini-Marathon? That’s me, and I’m at it again! The librarian already thinks I’m kind of a head case (due to the day I checked out The Cove and Black Swan at the same time), so why draw the line now? Of course, I’ve also checked out a bunch of Sandman comics and a DVD of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas to serve as a potential palate cleanser after I finish the marathon so…maybe he’s onto something.
First my opinions on the previous three movies I checked out. Haxan: Very fascinating, easy to see why it was so influential. Naked Lunch: Weird, visceral, and utterly goddamn cool. Angels in America: Emotional, powerful, and…what’s that? No, no, that’s just a piece of sand in my eye…and in my heart…
Anyway, these are the two I’ve checked out today. I don’t have any wine this time around, just beer. But it’s a liiiiittle too close to my medication time to get tipsy so…I’m watching these suckers sober. Hoooooooo boy.
The time has come!
The final and most spectacular of crossovers filmed at Magfest 2013 has arrived. It’s The Island of Doctor Moreau, reviewed by Diamanda Hagan alongside… Diamanda Hagan, Diamanda Hagan and Diamanda Hagan?!
Cross the event horizon as time, space, reality, soul, mind and power unexpectedly fold in on themselves around the singularity of an impossibly awful movie and remake reality into Haganity!
If you’re only going to watch one review this year, make it this one!
(But why would you watch only one? That would be silly!)

I find that some of the things that Kyle reviews are way more disturbing than the things Brad reviews. I mean, Brad reviews some pritty messed up stuff, but most of that is exploitation and crappy pornos- every one involved in the making of them knew to some extent that they were crappy and sometimes unintentionally laughable. The films Kyle tackles, on the other hand, tend to be artsy or trying to get a valid point across. The film makers believed whole-heartedly that what they were creating was a profound and artistic cry against something and that people should therefore respect that film. For some reason, knowing that when watching both thier reviews, it takes more will power to sit through an episode of Brows Held High rather than The Cinema Snob. But I enjoy Kyle himself so much that the nightmares are well worth it.
I’ve often found that art-house films are more unsettling and disturbing than horror movies. I’ve seen David Lynch’s ‘Eraserhead’ about… a dozen times. I am still not sure whether or not I like the film … but for one reason or another, I keep finding myself compelled to watch it. I think that it’s because the film disturbs me and leaves such an impression long after viewing is why I continue to subject myself to something that I know will haunt my dreams.
In a strange way, I’ve found Kyle’s reviews to be a comfort. He is able to contextualize and explain the finer points of a film’s overall message, something that may be lost to me in my state of “WHAT IN THE HELL AM I EVEN LOOKING AT!?” … I haven’t seen everything he’s reviewed (I am a lesser being and would have likely gone completely insane loooong ago if I had) … but I can point to many of his reviews that have helped me appreciate the films I have seen better — if not changed my view on them completely.
There are several films I’d really love Kyle to review. “Santa Sangre” for one, and “Suspiria” for another. While both are considered “weird” films, I’d have to say that they are surprisingly normal when compared to some of the other things he’s reviewed.
What about you guys? Has Kyle changed the way you’ve felt about a film? Positively? Negatively? Both?

(PS: Reblogged and babbled under for 1)a great post, 2)a fantastic picture of Kyle. IT’S BLACK AND WHITE AND CLASSY ALL OVER! :D)
I wish CR and Kyle would get more notoriety. They’re my absolute favorites. I think both leave me feeling like I gained new and interesting facts that I enjoy learning about. I wish they made more stuff more often because I love their work. I usually end up going on TGWTG for them and end up watching things from other reviewers and I watch those.
(Mine too. Especially CR, because he’s a pretty great artist and I really like his videos.-Hatted)
(wait why is kyle shirtless -Floss)

Say, I’m curious about this movie!

Firin’ up the old Google…

Okay, Wikipedia isn’t always the best resource, but I’m sure that—

Wait, what.

WHAT.

WHAT.

BUT WHY.
